Great Job! Looking forward to opening day.
I don't really like my group to be called "poacher" when other groups "forget" scanlating, but ok, I wasn't in the right there either. I won't mind because of the mention in the timeline about MH. You could add that FoOlRulez scans was created on the 9th of August 2008... :3
Interesting website. Keep it up and updated =)
*disappears*
Looking good so far.
Everything looking solid. This is definitely going to shake up the scanlations scene.
You know, I really love the work you've done, and I've been looking forward to this since I heard about it. (The website itself rocks~)
I must share one of the concerns that I thought of after reading. This would be a perfect way for publishing companies to know how we work and how we download. It's like putting all the insider information right in one place. I'm sure if they wanted to know it would be easy enough to find, but it's all right here. I hope it is not used in this way, though.
I believe we're going to be splitting into the 'public' scanlating and the more 'black market' scanlating at some point soon (or something similar to this). It just feels like this might be a turning point, especially with MH and all the drama revolving around it.
In any light it's good to have records of these things, and it paints a very clear picture of what it was, what it is, and what it could be. ^^
Honestly, there is no secret within the scanlation world that the licensing companies don't already know, in fact, a few of them are scanlators themselves. So either side won't be gaining nor losing anything with this. More of an overall insigh for everyone.
So far, this site is shaping up very nicely :D it certainly got the history right~ I have nothing but compliments for all your hard work~ :D
Looks good!
Don't know if this would be put in, but Kindan no Aku was started up in 7/06 to scan Eden and is still pretty active today.
Looks nice! ^^
Must've taken awhile to get all this information.
I learned a lot.
Good stuff.
Can't wait for the opening.
It was quite interesting. In many ways because I haven't been paying attention to the scanlation scene recently. Not really a huge fact but TJO started up July 24th 2002. Also it was interesting hearing interviews from people I haven't talked to in years. I guess I spent a lot of time reminiscing.
You've done a wonderful job with making this site. I really found this to be interesting, hope this can grow out to some sort of community log of some sorts to record how the scanlation community evolves.
You guys done a good job but you forgot a good website : raw-paradise.
It does not even appear in the History...
It's been around since 2005
It's been and still is one of the best fresh raws provider (almost the biggest provider lately) and it offers many interesting series that no one scan.
Anyway, well done.
Hey, guys, I want to thank you for making a site to document one of the greatest (and yet bad) things that happened in the anime community! I've always thought about doing something like this, but a lone person lacking the knowledge of a vast history was very unlikely to do so. Seeing this has made me more proud than being downed.
Of course, one can say the info here is a cup half-full (or empty for some). Along with the interviews and all, you should more insider articles... stuff like a leecher's point of view (thinking back on pny's thoughts here). I'm not a massive leecher myself, but I know there're many great stories to be heard from that side.
As for anything else to say, I have nothing... for now. I'll be keeping watch!
Awesome site! I didn't realise there was so much history behind scanlations. *goes off to continue reading*
wow, being a staffer for snoopycool, it was awesome to learn more about our great disappearing leader :P I've known him through Cosmos (I'm the husband mentioned ^_^) and I must say I've enjoyed the projects I've worked on.
This overall project is completely awesome and probably the most comprehensible history I've come across. You should add yuuwatase.org ^_^ it's ran by Cosmos and as the website suggests, does manga-ka's Yuu Watase's manga ^_^ (i know shameless plug...but I don't work for her so that should count XD)
keep up the good work :)
whoa hunter, you beat me to it!
...good work, gum! This site was much needed. I'm especially taken with the interviews section (still reading).

You mean to the collage page? It's done :)
This is an amazing concept - thank you!
Will now go get stuck into the histories... (^_^)
What ?
No reference to http://crazytje.be/ nor http://www.jcafe24.net/ ?
Your site is clean, but you should explain your real intention, which seems to write a book from it.

Yes, my master plan is to eventually turn everything here into a book, and make tons of money from it and retire to the Bahamas, almost there!
As for the other point, jCafe is mentioned...as for the other one, well, sorry we failed to mention it, I blame it on the scale of the project and the manpower we have ;P
great site, it's nice to reminisce about the times when manga translation groups weren't so 'fragmented', as it is today. I remember reading Kare Kano from mnagaproject, and thinking how amazingly well done it was. I'd then stick with any release they did, and rarely ventured away from anything not listed at Manga News (which was a godsend back then).
These days, it's hard to find a group which you stuck with back in 2006 that is still regularly producing today- MP, Manga Screener, Animewaves (Pastel!), Mangasync (Break Shot), Yanime..those were some amazingly productive times.
this is an awesome site. like a stroll down memory lane. it's amazing. thanks for all the great work. oh yeah, i thought manga-sketchbook was one of the big ones at the time? and who WERE The Furry Triangles?! they were incredible. haha.. anyway, thanks for the hard work in making the site. much appreciated.
I'm impressed at the time and work you put into the history of all this. At the time it was all happening I assumed everyone would forget everything we did. So how did Zyph get away from you without an interview? I demand an interview with Zyph!
Very interesting site, hopefully it will only grow in information and value from this day forward. Whoever put this together was very keen.
I'm wondering, though, how does one go about requesting one's own addition to the timeline/directory/whatnot? Or is it entirely admin-picked?

Glad you liked it! :)
As for the addition to timeline, at the time when this was made, it was mainly picked by the admins and the contributors, but after that point, it's all user-contributed, provided you've been part of the community for some period of time or has made some sort of impact or something.
If you have some more in-depth stuff you'd like to contribute (like an article or interview), you're welcome to get in touch with me... you can either get my contact through one of the head honchos from any of the groups featured here or any of the people we interviewed, or you could find me hanging around IRC sometimes, hehehe...
This was quite interesting!
And I'm sure must have required a lot of information gathering!
I also thought it might be interesting to write or observe the reccent actions of publishing companies against online manga sites these days. I sense change is in the air!
i was reading manga back in 2005 and im disappointed in myself that i never considered all the effort that goes into scanlating. i got directed here from a thread on stoptazmo, and i'm glad i took the time to read. this was very interesting, and i agree with stunfire about the recent actions of publishing companies against manga sites.

one last thing, i tried looking for the original announcement of the publishing coalition, and this is the earliest i could find.:
http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/digital/copyright/article/43437-japanese-u-s-manga-publishers-unite-to-fight-scanlations.html
if you look at the wording, it says "The group is threatening legal action against 30 scanlation sites." not 'reader' sites, but 'scanlation' sites. hopefully that's just the authors ignorance in not knowing that the big reader sites don't do most of the scans they host, but it's still worrisome.
again, amazing site, hopefully this period of turbulence will end up as just a minor section in scanlations ever continuing history.
This is a great site. It was a pleasure reading the history of scanlation. However, I'd like to mention that Inane wasn't as concerned regarding other groups scanlating Naruto. I don't know how people outside the group viewed it, but at least the core members didn't think we had a "right" to Naruto scanlation. We were fine with other groups picking up Naruto. Also, we disbanded mainly due to everyone becoming busy with their lives outside scanlation.
I hope that clears up a few things =)

@james Ah I see, it's great to hear it from someone on the inside, I had trouble finding anyone from Inane by the time I started writing this, I will definitely incorporate that into the next iteration of changes that I'm about to introduce to the site in the near future!
@stunfire: You bet! Keep an eye out for some announcements soon!
@foolish_mortal: Woah good job collecting those links! I do plan on introduce a chapter on the events that took place in 2010, since quite a bit of stuff happened since the launch of this site, keep an eye out for some announcement on it, and worry not, your hard work wont be in vain ;)
Thank you for this site. I got into manga late ... last year. It's great that you have put up so much information. Wow! it's almost like a thesis. I started reading this last week and have not finished it yet. I enjoyed every part of it that I have read so far, especially the interview with the Mangaupdates team.
I think the population of community should in the 10,000 to 50,000? I don't know, I'm just guessing. Any clues to how big it is?
thanks again,
juunta
