1. What is Ranma 1/2?
I suspect that very few people who don't already know what Ranma is would be reading this FAQ, so I'll keep this brief.
Ranma 1/2 is a hilarious martial arts sex comedy by the great Japanese artist Rumiko Takahashi. The series centers around two young people, Ranma Saotome, a talented young martial artist, and Akane Tendo, who are entered into an arranged engagement by their meddlesome parents. This scenario is complicated by the minor fact that Ranma under a Chinese curse by which whenever he is splashed with cold water, he instantly changed into a buxom young girl.
A parade of fantastic and goofy characters soon turn a relatively simple engagement into a tremendously complicated web of love, lust, and general weirdness, all with riotously funny results.

2. Where can I find Ranma in the USA and Canada?
The commercial releasing rights to all things Ranma in North America is owned by a company called VIZ, which has subdivisions in Viz Video (which translates and releases the Ranma anime series), and Viz Comics (which does the comic).

As of today, 12/25/99, Viz had just released, by their numbering system, Part 8, number 9 of the Ranma series. This issue contains in the Japanese numbering system book 18, parts 2 & 3. Viz releases two chapters per month, which is why there issue numbers are basically half what the japanese numbers are.
They've also released 14 graphic novels, which covers the entire series up to book 16, part 11.
They release one issue a month, with two chapters each, so whenever you read this you can project their progress forward to figure out where they are now.

Our Project began at book 17, part 5, and in the 11 months since we started, Viz has caught up to us and passed several of our earliest chapters. Our original plan on this subject was to remove the chapters from our website as Viz caught up. Not from any legal need to, but as a courtesy.
But we discovered that the rest of the world is FAR behind the US & Canada in getting Ranma released. Many places don't get it at all. So for the sake of our international fans, we've returned those removed chapters back onto our website. But if you live in the US and Canada, please keep Viz's progress in mind and go buy the real thing.

3. What is The New Ranma Project?
The New Ranma Project is a group of anime/manga fans that banded together to create home grown graphical translations of the Ranma 1/2 manga. Our goal all along was to translate the SECOND half of the manga series. This being all the chapters that Viz comics have not yet done.
The project began in February of 1999 with EvlNabiki and myself (SHADE). Taking our cue from The Ranma Project (or the original Ranma Project as we personally call it now, not to mention stealing the name since we were too lazy to think of one ourselves) we began to scan and graphically translate a handful of chapters of Ranma.
In the middle of April, we began posting our work to the usenet newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.anime, along with requests for volunteers to help us out, since the task we proposed to do was WAY too big for only two people to do. There was an immediate reaction, with a few people volunteering to help out. From then on, bolstered by a slow but steady stream of new volunteers, our project grew in size, and continued to translate chapters at an ever increasing pace.
EvlNabiki & I, since we had the import books and scanners, did all the scans, then handed the chapters off to our volunteers for the rest of translation work to be done. They then sent the finished chapters back to us, and we posted them to the newsgroup.
Our project completed 235 chapters of Ranma. That is every chapter between book 17, part 5, and book 38, part 9, which is the end of the series.The numbers I just gave are according to the japanese numbering system created by the Shonen Sunday collection books. Viz comics numbers their chapters differently. I'll get into that more later.
A typical book of Ranma in the Shonen Sunday collection numbering system has 11 chapters in it. Each chapter being 16 pages. A very rare chapter might be 17 or 18 pages.
In the final two books of Ranma, books 37 & 38, due to a handful of extremely long chapters, book 37 only has 10 chapters, and book 38 only has 9 chapters, even though the books are the same length as all the others.

4. How do the Japanese and American chapter numbers relate to each other? And do you have a list of ALL chapters of Ranma from the entire series?
OK get ready for a long addendum here. This is a list of ALL the chapters of Ranma. Plus who did all the chapters in our project. After that I'm going to do a list of Ranma graphic novels, and a short list to help people figure out how the two relate to each other. It'll look a little weird at first, but with a bit of study you can figure it out.

WHEW! Alright, not up next is a list compiled by Barry van Unen, who sent me a bunch of emails trying to figure out how his graphic novels related to the chapter numbers that we were using. This list details the contents of the first 14 graphic novels released by Viz comics. The names are all different, but they start at chapter one and go through them 1 by 1 so you can figure out how they match up. I'll be doing a little match up section after this.

So you're hardly missing anything. You've got all the graphic novels that exist, and are only missing a handful of chapters in the middle. If you wait for the next graphic novel to be released and buy it, you're set will be complete without any gaps at all. YAY! ^_^
